The day city is the one everyone knows. Salarymen, permits, cameras, the whole apparatus of a functioning state. At last light the apparatus goes to sleep, and a second body assumes control of the same streets under a different set of rules. Not a criminal underworld hiding from the law. A parallel legal shift, formally recognized, deliberately unexamined. Debts get settled, territory gets adjusted, bodies get moved, and by 6am the day city wakes up to a place that looks untouched.
